Scope: Construction of a fibre reinforced concrete flood wall with integral high security electrified weldmesh fencing to the full perimeter of an existing substation. Stabilisation of the river bank (consisting of rip-rap stone and gabion baskets), upgrading of the internal substation drainage system, including installation of several pumping stations in the event of a high ground water level. The installation of specialist flood gates and stop-logs in the perimeter wall and flood-proof doors to the critical control buildings. Upgrading of the site lighting and cleaning of the existing gravel chippings due to silt deposits left from a previous flood event at the site.

Unusual aspects: Enabling works consisting of Japanese Knotweed removal. Phasing of the works due to the high level of security requirements on the site and to manage the new flood wall and fence being on the existing fence line. Installation of a temporary electrified fence system to maintain security during the removal of the existing fencing. Utilisation of a remotely monitored CCTV camera system to enhance security provisions and provide a visual deterrent.
Installation of a temporary dam in the River Don to enable the construction of the river bank stabilisation.
